Collection: Divan Bed Base Covers

Give your divan base a proper refresh without buying a new bed frame. Our crushed velvet base covers stretch over your existing divan in minutes, hiding worn fabric and tired edges under a smooth, hotel-quality finish — available in single, double, king and super king.

What a divan base cover actually does

Most divan bases start looking dated long before the mattress on top of them does — the fabric fades, marks appear, and the edges fray from years of being knocked by hoovers and bed frames shifting on carpet. A divan bed base cover fits over the existing base like a fitted sheet, using an elasticated hem to pull tight around the underside, so the whole base looks refreshed without needing new upholstery or a full bed replacement.

At Stoftly, ours are made in crushed velvet with a spandex blend woven through the fabric, which is what gives the stretch. The elastication runs along both the top and bottom edges, so the cover grips the frame from both sides rather than just sitting loosely over the top — this matters more than people expect, because a cover that only grips one edge tends to ride up or bunch at the corners within a few weeks.

Cover vs. wrap vs. valance — which one do you actually need?

This trips a lot of people up, so it's worth being direct about it. A base cover (sometimes called a base wrap — the terms are used interchangeably by most UK retailers, including us) fits the whole base like a sock, concealing the sides entirely. A valance, by contrast, is a decorative skirt that sits between your mattress and base and only hangs down the front and sides — it doesn't cover the base itself, and it won't hide marks or fix a base that's genuinely worn.

If your divan base has ottoman storage or drawers, a full base cover is still the better option, since our elasticated design pulls back easily when you need to lift the lid or open a drawer, rather than being permanently fixed like stapled fabric would be.

Sizing guide

Divan bases don't follow one universal UK measurement, so it's worth checking your base dimensions rather than assuming your mattress size and base size match exactly (some bases run slightly smaller than the mattress that sits on them). Our covers are cut to:

  • Single — 91 x 193 cm
  • Double — 137 x 193 cm
  • King — 152 x 203 cm
  • Super King — 183 x 203 cm

Because of the stretch built into the fabric, there's a small amount of give either way, but for the neatest, tightest fit, always match to your actual base measurement rather than rounding up.

Fabric and care

Crushed velvet has a natural sheen and texture variation — that's the fabric doing what crushed velvet does, not a flaw. To keep it looking its best, avoid tumble drying on high heat, which can flatten the pile permanently. A cool iron on the reverse side and a gentle wash cycle keep the texture intact for longer.

Why cover instead of replace

A new divan base runs into hundreds of pounds and involves dismantling your current bed, moving the mattress, and disposing of the old base. A cover solves the same visual problem — a base that looks tired against a nice mattress and bedding — for a fraction of the cost and with zero disruption to your bedroom for more than the few minutes it takes to fit.

FAQ

Is a divan base cover the same as a divan base wrap?
Yes, in practice. Both terms describe the same product — a fitted, elasticated fabric cover that stretches over the entire divan base. "Wrap" and "cover" are used interchangeably across UK retailers, ours included.
What's the difference between a base cover and a valance?
A base cover fits over the whole base and conceals it completely, top to bottom. A valance is a decorative skirt that hangs from between the mattress and base down the front and sides only — it dresses up the look but doesn't cover or protect the base itself.
Do I need a valance if I already have a base cover?
No. A base cover already conceals the base entirely, so a valance becomes optional and purely decorative on top. Many people skip the valance altogether once the base is fully covered.
Will a base cover fit a divan with storage drawers or an ottoman lift?
Yes. Our covers use elastication rather than a permanently fixed fit, so the fabric pulls back easily when you need to open drawers or lift an ottoman base, then springs back into place afterwards.
How do I know which size to order?
Measure your actual divan base — not your mattress — width and length. Our covers are cut for Single (91 x 193 cm), Double (137 x 193 cm), King (152 x 203 cm) and Super King (183 x 203 cm), with enough stretch to accommodate small variations.
Can I machine wash a crushed velvet base cover?
Yes, on a gentle cycle. Avoid high heat when drying, as it can flatten the velvet pile over time. A cool iron on the reverse side, if needed, keeps the texture looking right.
